Back when I was in London, I'd asked a few Australian friends some of the places they really enjoyed eating at (I still have that list somewhere in my half unpacked luggage). They'd told me about Bills, and Bills2, and having read about it on Helen's site as well, I figured it would be a good time to try.
So taking Helen's lead, I searched out breakfast out at Bills. The plan was to get there, roughly around 8.30am. And we did just that, despite racking up barely 5hrs sleep. Upon entering, you notice the massive table in the centre of the restaurant. It comes with a massive bowl of eggs, and newspapers and magazines littered around for your perusal. After deciding what I wanted from the menu, I went straight for the Bill Grangers cookbook collection which were on display on a shelf nearby. Now this is a book I wouldn't mind having in my (currently) empty library.
The big table.
A tip for future punters venturing out this way. Don't order your drink straight away.
I ordered the Orange Juice - $4.70 upon being seated.
If you look through the menu, you can choose a Sunrise drink - $4.80 which consists of banana, OJ, yoghurt, and berries. Noice! (It's in the background - purplish drink).
The picture above is of the Homemade Toasted Coconut Bread - $5.80. In hindsight, probably not the best choice given I could still only chew with my front teeth, and didn't get to enjoy the taste so much. I'm sure it was very nice though :)
Ricotta Hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter - $16. This was really tasty (not $16 tasty, but tasty all the same), but my friend pointed that that it didn't taste like there was ricotta in them. I didn't even know Ricotta was something I could eat ... I thought it was a style of pancake. heh... Just looked up the wiki for it :)
Free range scrambled eggs with Wholewheat toast - $11.80. The healthier alternative. Now why didn't I think of that :) Eggs were a little salty. The toast... well, wheaty toasts don't usually scream out "delicious", and this one is no exception :)
We left the bread crusts behind ;-) I had an excuse though - they were impossible to chew with only my front teeth :)
And what a hearty breakfast that was. A queue of about 8 or so people had formed by the time we had finished our meal. I was suffering from food coma, and 45 mins of walking around afterwards, failed to cure it. A nap was called for, and after the drive home back in the drizzle, that's what occurred ;)
The trip was worthwhile all the same. It needed a bit of imagination to bring out the sunny weather. Imagination also pondered the lifestyles of some of the other morning diners. Perhaps some were just stopping by whilst walking their dog, or doing their morning run. Perhaps some were on their way to the office, or just lazy to cook something up themselves. I'd say most there were Eastern Suburbs residents, well to do, and well... I'm jealous :)
Whether you take the time to go out, or whip up a gourmet brekky at home, take some time to sit down and enjoy a perfect start to the day, once in a while... :D
